Hundreds of thousands of people in the United States gathered for the March for Our Lives last weekend. The student-led march, which took place five weeks after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, became a big national story.
Using CrowdTangle, we compiled some high-performing posts, most of which were video and photos, from the march posted on Facebook. These posts sparked a lot conversations on our platform and generated lots of reactions.
Here’s how local news outlets covered this story through a local lens.
1. The Austin American-Statesman highlighted the speech by its local Hollywood celebrity Matthew McConaughey.
2. KMOT-TV, the North Dakota NBC affiliate, went Live on Facebook and interviewed a small group of demonstrators in Minot.
3. The Richmond Times-Dispatch put together more than 120 photos from the march in D.C., Richmond and across the U.S.
4. CBS Miami broadcasted on Facebook Live the speech from Naomi Wadler, the 11-year-old activist from Alexandria, Virginia, which was shared more than 600 times.
5. The Burlington Free Press talked to several high school students before heading to the march in D.C.
“I feel like in the past, it’s been adults solving our issues for us, but we have to take a stand because it’s our issue,” high school student Emily Coolidge told the newspaper.
6. Spanish-language local news station Noticias Ya used Facebook Live to cover the march from the perspective of a U.S. Hispanic student.
7. NBC 10 in Boston posted a story of its continuing coverage of the student march there. The post generated conversation with nearly 200 comments.
8. The New York Daily News’ story of the former Beatle Paul McCartney in the march in New York City garnered the attention of many. The post was shared more than 1,300 times and generated more than 5,000 reactions.
9. Fox 35 News, a Fox station in Orlando, shared a 1-minute video of the speech by gun-control activist Emma Gonzalez, a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
10. The Columbus Dispatch went Live on Facebook, showing aerials of the the crowd headed to the Ohio State House.
11. The PBS Seattle affiliate KCTS9 featured a few of Seattle’s youth participants and their reasons for joining the national march. The post got more than 850 reactions from readers.
12. The Washingtonian put together a map with practical information such as places to charge mobile phones and bathrooms for march attendees. The post was shared more than 360 times.
13. Finally, the 3-minute video of the performance by Broadway performers Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt resulted in high engagement for the CBS Miami station, which received 1.3 million video views and nearly 2,000 comments.
