John Kaplan Named Associate Vice President for Public Safety

Photo of John KaplanJohn Kaplan, a career veteran in police and campus security who has served as Boise State’s executive director of public safety since 2015, has been named associate vice president for public safety.

“John is a trusted leader who has spent his life in service to his community through the lens of public safety,” said Randi McDermott, vice president for campus operations. “He approaches each situation with a level head and an empathetic heart. He has built a team of tremendous professionals who work tirelessly under his leadership to make our campus community safe and welcoming. We are very fortunate to have someone with his level of integrity, care, knowledge and experience at Boise State.”

Kaplan has more than 34 years of experience in university and municipal police departments. Prior to arriving at Boise State, he served the state of New York in various capacities, including as chief of police in Potsdam and chief of police for the State University of New York at Potsdam and Canton.

“I am honored and grateful to be afforded the opportunity to serve Boise State in this capacity,” Kaplan said. “I look forward to furthering our shared campus safety vision and in working with Vice President McDermott and the leadership team of Campus Operations. I remain especially thankful for my talented and hard-working colleagues in the Department of Public Safety.”
